Prof Shaw is a physical geographer by profession, and co-ordinates the Geography programme within the Faculty of Science and Agriculture, St Augustine. His research interests lie in the fields of geomorphology and the reconstruction of environmental change, and he has worked extensively in southern Africa, the Caribbean, and southern Europe. He is the author of two books and around 80 refereed papers, most of which focus on the world's drylands, in particular the Kalahari of southern Africa. When not searching for the perfect desert he enjoys cricket, beer and scuba diving.

Main Research Area

Geomorphology, Environmental Change, Physical Geography.

Current Research

  1. The scientific potential of the caves of Trinidad & Tobago - see the caves website here.
  2. The application of SIMS trace element and oxygen isotope analysis to studies of climatic change from speleothems and associated cave deposits
  3. Lakes and sand dunes as evidence of Historical and Quaternary environmental change in southern Africa.
